ABOUT THAT MAP EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT...
To celebrate the official launch of the Cove Creatives studio, we thought it only fitting to commission a map of our beloved habitat, Newport Beach, by Kathryn Green Illustration.
It was only a couple of years ago that Kathryn and her photographer husband, Andy Green, bade farewell to Newport in search of greener pastures. Now living on NSW’s south coast, the couple are currently completing their third major home renovation while continuing with their creative professions. Surfing on much less crowded breaks, starting a family and learning to rear a couple of horses are also on their list of accomplishments since leaving Sydney.
Originally trained at UTS as an Interior Architect, Kathryn eventually made a brave career move into the wedding industry as an illustrator, creating beautiful hand-painted invitations that have been sought after the world over. Many of the weddings Kathryn worked on required hand-drawn maps detailing the location of the service venue, reception venue, accommodation etc…and it is here that the self-taught artist soon found her creative niche.
“The success to my maps in particular is all the little details in and around each illustrated scene. From painting I then scan each illustration in and begin post production and layout. I work with the client to achieve the best result, all the while ensuring I include all the detail and information that they need in each piece. For bridal clients it’s often accommodation and travel details, for commercial clients it can be anything from company celebration/milestone details through to hotel navigation terms. I hand paint all the text that comes with this - there are many layers of illustration required but I love the process and delivering the finished product.”
For our special map of Newport, which we are absolutely thrilled to have on our main studio wall, we asked Kathryn to include the milestones of the area, including The Newport Hotel, Surf Club, favourite shopping, beauty, hair and coffee spots, and ‘The Cove’- the north end of the beach which is the inspo behind our studio moniker.
